Pete's Dad Blog Thoughts on being a dad

Insomnia

It's an unknowable time in the night. I wake up to the sound of a whisper. Christina: "Get back in bed, Olive! It's time to sleep!"

It's 4am. Olive: "Momma, The sky is turning green!" It's the pre-dawn, and this is exciting to her; she hasn't really seen this before. Christina is angry. Olive is wide awake. I set her up on her tablet, get her a snack, tumble back into bed.

It's 6:45. Cries of pain from the bathroom. Panic! It turns out that Olive has been sitting on the toilet for the last 90 minutes watching shows on her tablet, her legs have fallen asleep, and she does not like it at all. She's sobbing with regret: "I just wanted to watch my tablet while I peed!" After some calming down, she gets better.

It's 0720. We just got ourselves ready to start the day, and are about to head out to kita. Big yawn from Olive. "Daddy, I'm tired."

Most days, Olive is a really, really easy child. Occasionally, things go weird. It's not that I fault her the insomnia; I've certainly had my own struggles there. If anything, there's a sense of relief: she's big enough now that the prospect of entertaining herself on her own for a few hours is interesting to her, not scary.

Still, it's interesting that she's still young enough that last night brought her two distinct new experiences. She learned about the perils of getting too comfy on the toilet, but she also got to see the sun come up.
